South Florida CU’s fin lit program wins

MIAMI (July 6, 2010) – South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union (FCU) was recently issued the 23rd Annual Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award for its outstanding support of education. This marks the second consecutive year the Florida Department of Education recognizes the Credit Union for its “Got Green?” financial literacy program. And during its Annual Outstanding School Volunteers and Exemplary Dade Partners Awards, Miami-Dade County Public Schools inducted the Credit Union into its Hall of Fame.

“Got Green?” is a free service designed to meet students’ need for unbiased personal finance. Initiated by South Florida Educational FCU in 2007, “Got Green?” was developed as a three part financial literacy workshop designed to teach the importance of responsible credit, budgeting and savings/ checking accounts. The program has grown to also include workshops on student loans and identity theft.

Due to its success at the high school level, South Florida Educational FCU has expanded “Got Green?” to include all Miami-Dade County Public School and Miami Dade College students. Elementary through college level workshops are now available. Credit Union membership is not required to schedule student workshops.

To date, the program has reached more than 24,000 students with 9,071 students participating in its financial literacy program this school year. The National Youth Involvement Board (NYIB) tracks financial literacy presentations among credit unions. According to NYIB, South Florida Educational FCU reached the largest number of students in the state of Florida and ranks number four in financial literacy outreach in the nation for the 2009-2010 school year.

The “Got Green?” program is just one of the ways South Florida Educational FCU has been serving the educational community of South Florida for the past 75 years as a not-for-profit financial cooperative. In addition to its financial literacy workshops, the Credit Union attends career fairs to help promote the importance of developing professional skills in the work place and provides paid high school internships for students interested in finance, accounting and marketing. In addition, for students who are members of the Credit Union, South Florida Educational FCU annually awards 15 full tuition based Florida Prepaid Scholarships to high school seniors and up to $1,000 tuition reimbursement scholarship each semester for Miami Dade College students.
