HarborLight Credit Union Opens 2nd High School Student-Run Branch
HarborLight Credit Union and Whitehall High School have teamed up to open the second White Lake Area student-run credit union branch. The student-run branch is located at Whitehall High School and is being dubbed the Viking branch. “We are very excited about our 2nd Student Branch opening, and right next door! We are looking forward to helping students gain a better understand of finances thru this program,” said Linda Wood, HCU’s CEO.
The Wildcat Student-run branch opened last year at Montague High School and had a very successful first year.
Both, the Viking and Wildcat branches were established as an educational program and only students, faculty and staff at the school are permitted to use the branch. The branches use several student workers hand selected by the school principals and Sheryl Hogle, HCU’s Youth Educator.
HCU has been involved with the Montague and Whitehall school systems conducting classroom presentations on financial education for the past several years. “We want to provide the students with ‘real world’ learning experiences and help them develop good money management skills, said Hogle. The credit union philosophy is that learning responsible money management is as important as earning it.”
The new Viking branch will be open on Wednesdays during both lunch times throughout the school year. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Oct. 21 for the opening “kick-off” day .
