Freedom CU promotes Financial Literacy where English is 2nd Language

In November 2005 Freedom Credit Union, in tandem with the Pennsylvania Credit Union Foundation, approved a grant for Lowell Elementary School to promote financial literacy in schools. The financial literacy program at James R. Lowell Elementary School is focused on assisting thirty school students who are studying English as a second language. As part of the program, a laptop computer will be purchased to help educate students about the basic role of money and the importance of saving through the use of games and additional educational materials.

As a show of support for Lowell’s involvement and interest in the financial literacy program, representatives from the credit union including Freedom’s President/CEO, Lee T. MacMinn and Freedom’s Executive Vice President/COO, John F. King, visited the school on Wednesday, February 8, 2006. After meeting school principal, Shellie Bock as well as participating teacher James Slater, and several of his students who are currently taking part in the program, a check was presented by Freedom Credit Union on behalf of the Pennsylvania Credit Union Foundation. The funds will be used to furnish Mr. Slater’s classroom with materials for carrying out the financial literacy curriculum.

We wish Lowell Elementary School the best of luck in their effort to spread financial literacy and educate young people about the benefits of credit union membership. Freedom is proud to support the local community and uphold the credit union motto of people helping people!
