Pre-Conference Workshop
Design Thinking: A Human-Centered Approach to Innovation
In order to succeed, innovation must solve a human need. Design thinking is a proven innovation process that that combines empathy, technical feasibility, and business strategy. In this workshop, Matt Davis and Brent Dixon will use hands-on projects and real-world examples to guide you through the seven steps of human centered design and give you the tools you need to inspire and execute ideas at your own credit union.

Opening General Session: Becoming Your Younger Members' Financial Advocate
If your credit union is to be seen as more than a mere commodity provider, you will need to leverage the industry’s mantra of “People Helping People” to deepen what you have and grow your credit union in a sustainable fashion. Join Claudine Oriani as she describes the benefits of creating youth financial advocacy initiatives at your credit union to “get them and keep them.”

  •    The benefits of being an advocate: For your members, your staff, and your future
  •    The connection between advocacy and ROI
  •    Creating sustainable youth advocacy programs
  •    The tools you’ll need to be successful

General Session: Truly Connecting with the Youth Market
What is working and what isn’t when it comes to marketing to young members? Claudine Oriani leads an insightful discussion on techniques to improve your credit union’s success within the “marketing funnel,” including:

  •    Getting your board on board
  •    Using the “cradle-to-crib” approach to deepen relationships
  •    Best practices being used today by other credit unions
  •    The impact of social media on youth marketing initiatives

Breakout: Top-of-the-Class Techniques
Need some new ideas for engaging young students in financial literacy concepts? Join us for this hands-on session, demonstrating tried-and-true methods that secured great results.

Breakout: Leadership Skills that Get Results
All too often, we are promoted into leadership positions because of tactical knowledge and skills, not leadership savvy. Join Claudine Oriani as she provides tips that will help you improve your effectiveness as a team or group leader, including:

  •    The difference between managing and leadership
  •    Connecting others to your mission and strategic intent
  •    Getting beyond micro-management and into delegation
  •    Measuring for results and creating action plans

Breakout: To Be Announced
We're confirming one more option--a hot topic you won't want to miss!

General Session: Cafe Conversations
Conference attendees will be invited before the conference and on site to submit topics for discussion in a café type atmosphere. During the session, the person submitting the topic will engage the group at his or her table on a discussion of the issue and maintain notes on the topic. At the halfway point of the session, participants will be invited to switch tables and engage in a new discussion. Notes on all discussions will be shared with conference attendees after the conference, including actual forms, reports, policies, and formulas you can use at your credit union. Don't miss out on this session--it was very popular in 2009!

General Session: Youthful Products for a Younger Membership
Everyone knows that adding younger members make sense for credit unions, but knowing is only half the battle. What do they actually want from their financial institutions? Brent Dixon, The Filene Research Institute’s Young Adult Advisor, dissects the mind of the youthful consumer and details the products, services, and recruiting strategies credit unions can use to grab them. Tune in for a discussion on youth-specific products Filene’s 30 Under 30 group designed specifically for their peers.

General Session: Best Practices Showcase
Nothing beats learning from peers! This is becoming a tradition, in which you have the opportunity to share your most revolutionary solutions with your peers...and win a free registration to the 2011 NYIB Annual Conference!

Submit a one-page summary of your brilliant work in youth marketing, financial literacy training, or a related area. Once approved for presentation (to ensure taste and legality), you'll create a Best Practices Poster to share with the audience and display during the session. Participants will judge the posters and choose two winners—one for youth marketing and one for financial education—to be awarded free registration to the 2011 NYIB Annual Conference.

General Session: The Top 12 Technology Trends
Ron Galloway will predict the top technology trends and how credit unions can adapt to and prosper from them. For example, will Twitter become a primary member communication tool? Will artificial intelligence "bots" manage and trade funds? Will cable companies' adoption of IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) allow CUs to have their own low-cost cable channel? Will CU debit cards contain health care information? Will mobile phones become the new "wallet"? Come find out more!

Breakout: Approaching Decision Makers for Favorable Results
Whether you’re responsible for marketing, public relations or business development, you will continue to face that inevitable day when you have to approach “the powers that be” with your ever-so-incredible, albeit slightly-out-of-the-ordinary idea or request. For the extroverted and highly persuasive, approaching a decision maker is a walk in the park. But for others, it could be like being chased in the jungle by a jaguar.

Ultimately, we all have a common interest. When you need an answer from “the powers that be,” you need to know what it takes to get a “yes.”In this session, Felicia Pope will teach you just that. See you there!

Breakout: Mad City Money
Join Kym Moore from High Plains Federal Credit Union’s show-and-tell of Mad City MoneyTM, impacting middle-to-high school students and their families. See how to get parent involvement, business and community partners with this “how-to” presentation and description of best practices for the Mad City Money simulation game

Breakout: To Be Announced
This breakout session will be announced as soon as we confirm it...and it'll be worth the wait.

General Session: Youth Focus Group (...back by popular demand!)
The popular Youth Focus Group session returns! Gain insight from students in the St. Louis area whose set curriculum includes a personal finance course as a requirement for graduation. They’ll share what resonates with them and what does not, what catches and keeps their attention and what doesn’t. This session will give you a fresh look at what you can and should be doing when presenting or marketing to youth in your field of membership..
